In all of our hackathons, where innovation knows no bounds, one project has popped up as a guardian for the vulnerable. The Musketeer System, born from a profound sense of purpose, is a groundbreaking endeavor that seeks to protect the innocent from a rare but harrowing form of child abuse. This project, The Musketeer System purpose is to defend the defenseless and fight for justice.
Stories That Ignite Change
Inspiration often springs from empathy, and The Musketeer System is no exception. The team, consisting of Hans Delano and Juan Sebastian, drew inspiration from the stories of individuals who suffer from Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP). This rare form of child abuse involves caregivers intentionally making a child sick or injured to garner attention or sympathy. It's a chilling and heartbreaking reality that, until now, has often gone unnoticed and unaddressed.
These stories fueled Hans and Juan’s desire to create a solution that could detect and prevent not only MSBP but also other forms of medical resource misuse, such as drug-seeking or insurance fraud.
The Musketeer System's Mission
At its core, The Musketeer System is a middleman software designed to collect and analyze medical reports from various hospitals and clinics. It leverages the power of machine learning to flag suspicious patterns of healthcare utilization, including frequent visits, multiple providers, inconsistent diagnoses, or excessive tests and treatments. When such patterns are detected, the software promptly alerts medical staff and provides them with recommended questions to ask patients to confirm or refute the diagnosis of abuse.
Blueprint for Building
The creation of The Musketeer System is guided by a commitment to privacy and transparency. The team has devised a meticulous plan for its construction, ensuring that sensitive patient data remains secure and that the decision-making process of the machine learning models is transparent and explainable.
The privacy of patient data is safeguarded through encryption services, which ensure that sensitive information is hashed and protected before it is sent anywhere. To handle the diversity of data formats from different healthcare providers, a data parser, fueled by a Large Language Model (LLM) such as ChatGPT, extracts relevant parameters for the machine learning model.
According to the team, the ML model itself is designed to be transparent and explainable, enabling human reasoning to understand its decisions. An AI chatbot is incorporated to facilitate communication between healthcare personnel and the ML model, preventing baseless accusations and allowing for professional judgment.
Overcoming Challenges
“Finding reliable and realistic data sets of medical records that could be used to train and test the machine learning models.”
Convincing healthcare providers and patients to entrust their data to the system, particularly when dealing with sensitive information, requires utmost dedication and transparency. Government approval regarding data privacy handling is another hurdle that must be surmounted.
Looking ahead, the vision for this project is resolute. Both Juan and Hans are committed to assuring stakeholders of privacy measures and expanding the software's reach to different contexts, countries, regions, and healthcare systems. User testing and evaluation are also on the horizon to validate the solution's effectiveness and measure its impact.
Our Thoughts
In the world of hackathons and tech innovation, The Musketeer System stands as a powerful reminder that technology can be harnessed for the greater good. It embodies the values of empathy, transparency, and a resolute commitment to protecting the innocent. EQ Hacks sees this project as a beacon of hope for those who have suffered in silence, defending the vulnerable and upholding the principles of justice and compassion. Not only does this align with our mission of advocating for CSA victims, we see The Musketeer System as a way of giving back tremendously to the community.
